The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) welcomes all interested parties to submit applications for off-take agreements in the supply of student Accommodation for NSFAS beneficiaries, including higher education institutions, lodging providers, developers, and investors. NSFAS has provided a fixed amount for accommodation, which may vary from year to year. The accommodation allowance is typically paid directly to the institution or accommodation provider on behalf of the student. NSFAS Allowances 

NSFAS bursaries at colleges and universities pay for these things.

  • amounts suggested for lodging,
  • living stipend,
  • conveyance and
  • Learning materials must be in compliance with the most recent DHET rules that have been authorized.

UNIVERSITY

  • Accommodation
  • As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500 per annum
  • Living allowance R15, of 000 per annum
  • Book allowances R5200 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance of R2900 per annum for students in catered residences

TVET

  • Accommodation in an urban area is R24,000 per annum
  • Accommodation in a peri-urban area is R18,900 per annum
  • Accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350 per annum
  • Transport R7000 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

NSFAS Accommodation Mandatory Requirement

  • Over 80% of the proposed beds should be catering to NSFAS beneficiaries
  • The proposed cost per bed should not exceed R45,000 per annum
  •  An undertaking that the envisaged accommodation will meet the minimum norms and standards.

How To Submit an Accommodation Request NSFAS

To discover NSFAS-accredited accommodation, you should start by contacting universities, colleges and TVET institutions. Off-campus student accommodation meets accreditation requirements recognized by these universities. College-approved dormitories and off-campus residence halls are automatically NSFAS certified

NSFAS Accommodation Application Deadline 2024/2025

Applications will close on November 10, 2023. All applications must submit all required supporting documents, including business cases if applicable.

Schools That NSFAS Approves and Pays For Accommodation

Students must ensure that their residence is accredited by NSFAS so that NSFAS can cover the cost of their stay. Each university has its own set of criteria and rules for selecting students to reside in private housing.

Does NSFAS Apply To A Single Room

Documents Required By NSFAS For Accommodation

Before attempting to submit an application for funding, make sure you have certified and genuine copies of the following documents:

  • Your South African identity card or birth certificate in its entirety (if you are younger than 16 years old).
  • ID of the guardian or parents (or death certificate where applicable)
  • Pay to advise, employment letters, and pension advice that detail income (SASSA slips are not required and SASSA should not be included as household income).
  • a consent form that has been filled out and signed by your parent or legal guardian, which you may get here. Applications won’t be approved and will be deemed incomplete if they don’t include a consent form signed by everyone whose income was disclosed in the application.
  • Please download the Handicap Annexure A from www.nsfas.org.za, fill it out, and include it with your application if you have a disability.
